Job context

To bridge the gap between education and the world of work, EDF welcomes more than 1 500 interns every year studying for qualifications that range from a post high school certificates to master’s degrees. In the context of its research activities in photovoltaic (PV), the R&D department of EDF contributes to IPVF.

The development of PV is a rapidly expanding sector in France as everywhere. From now on the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of utility scale solar PV has fallen to 60€/MWh in France in 2019. To further reduce the cost of the PV panels, the reliability of photovoltaic modules becomes a critical factor. PV panels gets a 20 to 25 lifespan and they may live up to 30 years. For that purpose, we suggest to explore aging of photovoltaic modules.

Main missions

The main goal of the internship will be to understand the mechanisms that degrade the performances of the PV modules. In particular, the studies will focus on the physico-chemical properties of the materials within the PV modules.


The intern will aim to:

  • Lead the bibliography on the mechanism degradations of photovoltaic modules
  • Optimize the method for sampling of modules
  • Characterize the physico-chemical properties of samples (Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy…)
  • Correlate the physcio-chemical properties with the performances of modules

  • Semiconductor physics.
